It's official - we have a vacation cottage for rent. While it was officially "for rent" before now, it took this long to get it listed somewhere. Flipkey had a free 60 day trial while homeaway.com wasn't returning my calls or emails (turns out the guy who had declared himself my contact was away on leave; his replacement just called me yesterday). Here is the link!

Weekend progress w/ pictures 8-29
Had lots of help and fun w/ friends this weekend - our friend Steve came out on Saturday w/ his son Cooper, and Lesa came our on Saturday and then back again w/ Rich on Sunday. Here's our completed items from the past weekend:
The latest pics - still not complete but almost there. Next weekend we will hang all the art in the Redfish and Gallery, as well as have the boutique completely set up and ready for bidness :)
- replaced doorknobs on the dressing rooms w/ ones that lock
- added light kits to the ceiling fans in the Redfish for some much needed extra light
- made a padded headboard for the bed in the Redfish
- finished painting all but one bookcase
- worked on displaying jewelry in the boutique
- added the shelf onto the display case so that I can stand up large pottery platters for display
- got about 60-70% of the clothing price tagged (while drinking mimosas)
- got our sign hung!
- removed a ton of ivy from the front landscaping to a. not kill the tree it was wrapped around and b. make more room for parking
- continued clean up in the gallery
- finished setting up the bar
- hung mirrors in the Redfish
- plugged in and partially programmed the cash register
- learned how to run credit cards for purchases
- bought/installed a smoke detector for the Redfish and worked on getting our fire extinguishers up to code

When it rains....it pours
Well maybe it's not "pouring" but compared to 4 months of no offers, last week was definitely a strong shower. Not only did we get the official offer early last week, but Friday I got a call from a realtor who showed our house in June. She said her clients have a contract on their house and were hoping to move forward on ours; but it was slightly out of their price range, so they wanted her to ask if we were willing to negotiate. I've no idea if they would have been able to give us a price we would consider or not, but told her about our contract and said I'd keep her info if it doesn't go through.
This weekend we're going to take another load of stuff down to the property. We're also going to meet with our photographer friends, Wendy and Davis Varner, to show them around so that they can take so local photographs that we will sell in the boutique. I am really excited to be starting off so quickly with our own local talent. In addition to the Varners, I will have at least two pottery artists from the Tampa area selling art in the boutique. Both of these ladies make ocean/beach/fish inspired pieces from clay. Pics to come!
After this weekend, we'll head down again with some bigger items (furniture for the Key West Cottage) the weekend of 7/29, and then return the following weekend to paint and set up the boutique. We'll have to move the remainder of our house into the condo somewhere around 8/10-8/15 if our closing remains the 15th.
Because the owners don't want us painting around their art collection that is still in the gallery, we'll have to postpone opening the boutiqe by a week; but we should be pretty set to open the weekend of August 13th. We're back to having the Key West cottage vacant, so as soon as we get it furnished and photographed, it will go up on vrbo.com and homeaway.com as advertised for rent.
I think that's all the updates for now. The pace is quickening....hope we can keep up :)

Introduction
Sometime during the week of January 24th, 2011, my husband Chris was reading a Boat US magazine. He described to me a "for sale" ad for a property - cottages with a cafe, marina, art gallery - then went to the computer to look for more information. Soon after he called me in to look. From his verbal description I assumed he was describing one unit within a larger one, and I wondered what could be different about that one vs. the many other resort-type properties to which we have dreamed about retiring. But upon seeing the website, I realized it was an entire property for sale at a price realistic to us. We agreed it was worth seeing and made plans to go down that weekend.
Upon seeing the property that Saturday and were blown away by how it looked as good, if not better, than the pictures online. We met the women running the restaurant and they were as nice as could be. We walked around the town and were charmed by its old Florida feel. Our good friends Rich and Lesa joined us and we stayed in Matlacha for the night. We had a great dinner at Bert's Bar and Grill, then returned to the Griffin Cafe the next morning for breakfast and to show the property to our friends. They were equally (if not more!!) smitten. We returned the next weekend with more friends (Tom and Wendi and a repeat visit from Rich and Lesa, who came equipped with champagne!) and the excitement built as we all agreed, it's a perfect fit for us.
We made an offer that week. After some back and forth, we came to a verbal agreement on February 18th with the official paperwork to follow. I was already shopping for furniture and planning inventory for the boutique. We wanted to name it in honor of our golden retriever-child, Tiki, and Yellowdog was born.
Our plan is to take over operations on June 1. As the restaurant is already being run, we will continue to have that operate as is. We will furnish two of the three cottages for week/weekend/weekly/monthly rentals, and plan to advertise these for rent on VRBO and Homeaway.com. We plan to open the boutique on our first weekend in operation, June 3rd. There are currently yoga classes being held in the gallery on Tuesdays and Thursdays that I hope will continue and expand. We plan to purchase stand-up paddle boards to rent out, along with some kayaks. Once we build a boat lift and bring the boat down, Chris hopes to operate boat tours and fishing trips.
That's the plan....please wish us luck!
